What is bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes episodes of extreme mood swings, from periods of elevated mood (mania or hypomania) to periods of low mood (depression). It used to be called “manic depression” because of these key symptoms.

The condition is more common than many people realise.
Types of bipolar disorder include:
- Bipolar 1 – manic episodes lasting more than a week, or requiring hospital treatment, often alongside shorter or milder depressive episodes
- Bipolar 2 – repeated depressive episodes with less intense periods of hypomania
- Rapid cycling bipolar – four or more mood episodes within a year, with brief stable periods in between
- Cyclothymia – milder symptoms of depression and hypomania over at least two years, which can sometimes develop into bipolar 1 or 2
Signs you might need help
Recognising symptoms early can be an important step towards getting the right treatment. While experiences vary, common signs include:
Manic or hypomanic episodes
- Feeling unusually energetic, euphoric or irritable
- Sleeping very little without feeling tired
- Speaking more quickly or having racing thoughts
- Impulsive or risky behaviour (such as overspending)
- Overconfidence or unrealistic beliefs about your abilities
Depressive episodes
- Persistent sadness or low mood
- Loss of interest in activities
- Feelings of guilt, hopelessness or worthlessness
- Difficulty managing daily tasks
- Changes in appetite or sleep patterns
- Thoughts of self-harm or suicide
If you notice these patterns in yourself or someone close to you, seeking professional advice can be an important next step.
